Differentiate by Design

Our minds have a unique way of “weeding out” things that are deemed familiar and insignificant to us. For example: if you live by a railroad track, and every night a train passes by, your mind eventually allows you to disregard that noise and sleep through a sound that once kept you up at night. This handy trick is called reticular formation. Back when we lived in caves, this function was essential for survival. We needed to be able to decipher between the familiar and the different in order for us to know whether, for example, a snapping twig was possible dinner or possible danger.

Reticular formation is super helpful when it comes to sleeping more soundly through the night or surviving the elements, but it can be a daunting hurdle for a brand. In a world where we are constantly bombarded by advertisements, how do we stand out among the noise?

Be. Different.

Branding is the easiest and, sometimes, most effective way for a company to differentiate themselves. It is the key component to a company’s messaging and overall aesthetic. Take, for example, Apple. When everyone else in corporate America was wearing business casual, they opted for a classic t-shirt uniform for their employees. A simple t-shirt said a whole lot about a company’s priorities, values and vision. These t-shirts now have a cult-following online, and many other companies, large and small, have piggy-backed off of this casual trend.

Nike also knows how to attract attention using their branding. Their Nike By You tool allows shoppers to create their own customized Nike shoe. This feature is unique to Nike, which gives them a leg-up against their competition (pun intended). The customer is granted a fun experience, as well as their own power to be different with their one-of-a-kind kicks.

In the world of branded merchandise, an easy way to differentiate yourself is through the decoration design. There is always a time and a place for a 1 color, 1 location imprint on a hard good, or the classic left chest embroidery on your favorite polo or jacket… but if we’re trying to stand out and be bold, having a little fun with your logo is an effective way to make a statement. This tactic can also turn a giveaway into a gift, creating something that looks more retail, refined and exclusive.
